Terraweena Stud was the original Boer goat stud in Australia and is known as a leading breeder of Boer goats. The company was responsible for the importation and establishment of Boer goats in Australia in 1990.
Having contemplated diversification into dorpers in 1998, Terraweena made the considered decision to hold off on importing dorper embryos from Africa as demand for Boer goats was beginning to bourgeon from the Asian region. Now, having made the decision to join the dorper fraternity in Australia we find ourselves thoroughly enjoying the comfort of joining an industry which is well established and where the animals clearly already hold their own in meat sheep circles.
Based near Toowoomba on the Darling Downs, the Terraweena White Dorper Stud is run alongside the Terraweena Boer Goat Stud on three properties which, although located in the same area, offer differing terrain. Terraweena itself, hilly and scenic is sheltered and undulating. Wanstead is almost 100% arable and grows the crops which feed the animals through use of an irrigation system. The third property, Terra Q, is home base to Geof and Celia Burnett-Smith and also serves as the export quarantine centre.
Having being fortunate enough to acquire embryos from a selection of top Gert Lotter ewes and utilising Egoli, the South African 2006 National Champion ram and his father, Pretoria, we are immensely proud of our first drop of white dorpers. We complemented these stylish Lotter bloodlines with embryos from Paardefontein stud owned by Stephanus Malan. The Malan bloodlines are bigger framed and were selected for their potential suitability to the Australian conditions.
A young ram from the Paardefontein stud honoured us by becoming 2008 National Champion Ram at Dubbo this year and gaining himself the name of "Terraweena Stefaans". His stablemates, largely from the Lotter bloodlines were all well placed and the ewes were equally decorated. Every animal we took came home with a ribbon.
We have established a bench mark for ourselves with that soft landing which will be hard to maintain!
We now also have lambs born from the stud of Peet Cilliers which we are breeding in conjunction with a Namibian group (NBS). These are shortly to be followed by lambs from the studs of
K Lotter, M Phillips and T Viljoen. These embryos represent both dorper and white dorper bloodlines.
As we do with the Boers, our intention is to gain and keep happy customers. We very much look forward to meeting you either now or in the near future. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any queries you may have.
