White Dorper Shows PDF Print E-mail
April 2008 will be forever marked on our calendars at Terraweena as a month of great note being the month we 'launched' our newly imported  white dorper genetics.

What better validation of our new blood lines than success at both local and national level.

Both the local Toowoomba show and the Dubbo Show held dorper and white dorper sections this year.  The Dubbo show hosted the 2008 National Dorper and White Dorper Show and, as such, was an event of great import where the best of the best meet and compete under an experienced South African judge invited specifically for the occasion.

2008 National Championships

Judge Ron Van der Merwe from South Africa appeared to be somewhat impressed at the standard of the standard of the animals, constantly referring to the improvement since his previous judging assignment in Australia a few years previously.

steph1.jpgTerraweena's inaugural National Championships show team consisted of seven animals, all of which were awarded a ribbon.

The trio of rams (7144, 7142 and 7091) were divided in their classes, by weight.   Terraweena 7144 and 7142 received 1st and 2nd place respectively in the heaviest white dorper lamb class, whilst Terraweena 7091 narrowly missed the heavy class, falling into the medium weight lamb class.  This class he won with much aplomb and followed up in the championship class outstripping his paddock mate Terraweena 7144 for Junior Champion Ram.

Later in the day he brought notoriety and delight to the Terraweena stud by securing the title of 2008 Australian National Grand Champion White Dorper Ram.  To achieve this title he had to compete against the Senior Grand Champion Ram, a hard call for any young lamb only 8 months old.dorp_rams.jpg

Our young ewes (7044, 7069, 7141 and 7151) flew the flag with dignity, with every one of them being awarded a ribbon on the day.

A heady experience for us all following our long association with the Boer goat industry.  Dorpers represent a new and different challenge to us - one which we meet with pride and pleasure which is now fanned by the warm glow of success at our recent showings.

The Toowoomba show preceded the National Championships by a couple of weeks and gave us cautious confidence in our stock.

Ram Terraweena 7144 was awarded the Grand Champion Ram ribbon, with his paddock mate Terraweena 7142 standing beside him as Reserve Champion Ram.  Terraweena 7091 was awarded 3rd place.  Interestingly Terraweena 7091 is from a different South African stud, namely Paardefontein, owned and operated by Stephanus Malan.  Terraweena 7144 and 7142 were the result of embryos derived from the South African stud of Gert Lotter, utilising his world champion ram Egoli and his father, Pretoria as sires for the embryo collection.

The ewes also performed exceptionally well, being placed in all the classes.

Although Terraweena is very much a commercially based company with its focus on growing the meat goat and goat meat industry, worldwide, we very much recognise the importance of maintaining a high profile in terms of quality of stock.  For that reason we ensure that we attend the Australian National Boer Goat Championships and State Championships on an annual basis to allow expert judges to assess our animals when competing with Australia's best.

From another viewpoint, attending the main shows is not only a highly challenging exercise, but is also a deeply fulfilling experience as we unite with other breeders in showcasing these wonderful animals for the world to see.   Serious breeders all achieve the same adrenalin rush in a showring with their finest animals on display and an independent world expert ranking them, professionally and indisputably, into their assigned positions.

Since the commencement of what is now called the Australian National Championships, Terraweena has exhibited at all but one of the eleven National Championships which have taken place in Australia, the first one being in 1997.

Terraweena prides itself on being the most decorated stud overall to have attended the Australian National Championships.

Throughout the eleven years that it has been held,

Terraweena has been awarded:

    7 Supreme Exhibits

    8 Grand Champion Does

    3 Grand Champion Bucks

    6 Senior Champion Does

    3 Junior Champion Does

    4 Junior Champion Bucks

    2 Reserve Senior Champion Does

    2 Reserve Junior Champion Bucks

Most Successful Exhibitor on numerous occasions

Terraweena consistently wins Most Successful Exhibitor at State level.  In 2007 Terraweena elected to take no does whatsoever and only take two young bucks to the State Championships in a bid to maintain a lower profile and support emerging quality from other studs.

Although our achievements at State level should not be diminished by our national record, it is the National Championships that provides a country wide comparison and the international flavour of top South African judges leaves no room for doubt.  A broad ribbon is a broad ribbon, awarded to the best animal on the day and it brooks no argument.

Terraweena's philosophy is not to rest on its laurels.  Many other studs have excellent quality animals too which is so beneficial to our industry as it hones the edge of competition and incentivises next year's breeding policies.  It is our firm belief that every stud benefits from the cutting edge of the National Championships. Whether parading ones own animals or merely attending as an onlooker,  it is the only certain way of ensuring an up to date and informed status in our ever-improving and progressive industry.

NUSAA PDF Print E-mail

So named to include all the countries of the partnership's origins, NUSAA is the culmination of input from breeders in Namibia, the USA and Australia.

Nusaa is a partnership whose American arm is based in Coalville, Utah with Tom and Carrie Boyer of Chalk Creek Boers,  Namibian partners Dirk Louw, Willie Coetzee, Oubaas Steenkamp and Ronnie Coleman and the ABS principles, Geof and Celia Burnett-Smith.

This partnership was developed to supply the American Boer goat industry with a number of new, elite genetic lines.

Nusaa has already conducted a live animal export consisting of 20 superior quality animals to act as a prelude to a much larger export of 400 embryos which will be implanted at Chalk Creek later this year.

Donors for the embryo collection include the 2007 Australian National Grand Champion Buck, Terraweena Burger, the 2006 Australian National Grand Champion Doe, Terraweena 1450 and other famous sires such as Lazareth, Abraham, Chrome, Morris and Moshie (son of Moses).  An equal number of elite sires and dams from the Amani Stud are donors for this same collection, including Amani Rupert and representatives from the Amani Atlantis, Amani Lancelot and Amani Lazer bloodlines.

It is our belief that this breeding nucleus will reflect the quality of our stock to good advantage and better facilitate the growing demand that our company receives from the region.

These animals were selected by Geof and Celia Burnett-Smith, in conjunction with Dirk Louw and Willie Coetzee.  All animals were selected specifically to represent leading bloodlines from the individual studs, for breeding performance and for their overall quality.

The stock was moved to a quarantine facility in Melbourne following their appearance at the 2007 National Championships in Sydney, where they had competed strongly, proving they were well and truly amongst the country's best.

The Nusaa partnership is an exciting prospect for all those involved.  We look forward to providing the American Boer goat indsutry with a new alternative in elite stock in the coming months.

To register interest in these new genetics or for any general enquires, please contact Tom and Carrie Boyer (Utah, USA), or Geof and Celia Burnett-Smith (Queensland, Australia).

Terraweena International PDF Print E-mail
In 2006, ABS announced an exciting new venture and the establishment of a new stud, Terraweena International.

Terraweena International was developed in a joint venture partnership between ABS and ‘BMW Farms’, from the Philippines.

So impressed with the Terraweena stock, were the principles of BMW farms, that they made a significant investment and the concept of developing a superior new stud based on the Terraweena lines, became a reaility.

Terraweena International has already exhibited at this year's National Championships and secured the second most points of any stud from Queensland behind its sister stud, Terraweena.  The stud also shares in the ownership of many of the top bloodlines and promises to be an exciting supplier of premium genetics.

ABS has entered this partnership, which will also produce sheep and cattle, with the belief that both partners can play their part in meeting the massive demand for these products all over the world.

This partnership is an exciting new development for all those involved which we believe will prove to be a major asset to both the goat meat markets and stud goat markets, world wide.
