White Dorper Stud PDF Print E-mail

  2008-salewb.jpg

Terraweena, best known for its introduction of the Boer goat breed into Australia, has now established a dorper and white dorper stud on its properties in the Darling Downs, Queensland.

Sharing pastures and facilities with the 1,200 strong Boer goat flock, the first lambs, born in August 2007, co-exist comfortably with their caprine counterparts, thriving on the excellent pastures we have enjoyed for the first time for many years.

Wanstead, now home to the main Terraweena stud, is largely arable with irrigation to large areas where sorghum and oats are grown for feed.

egoli_5.jpg Terraweena sourced its first white dorper genetics through Gert Lotter utilising not only some of Gert’s top ewes but also being fortunate enough to have access to Egoli (World Champion White Dorper Ram 2006 – 2007) and his father, Pretoria.

To give us an early diversity of genetics and believing them to be well suited to Australian conditions, Terraweena also introduced bloodlines from Stephanus Malan’s stud, Paardefontein.

In an arrangement with our Namibian partners, another 150 lambs from the famous stud of Pete Cilliers make up the full complement of white dorper genetics which form the Terraweena stud, along with further bloodlines from K Lotter. Dorper bloodlines were sourced from Micky Phillips and Theuns Viljoen.

With most of our experience in the selection and breeding of Boer goats, we look forward to input from one of the best dorper and white dorper breeders in the world, our Namibian partner, Dirk Louw.  Dirk Louw and Willie Coetzee not only made the selection in Africa of large numbers of the donor animals, on behalf of the partnership, but will also be visiting Australia regularly to monitor the progress of the animals and advise on sire selection and identifying ewes suitable for multiplication of progeny through embryo transfer.

We run our sheep the way we have run our goats, on a commercial basis, in large mobs on pasture and crops.  The 2007/08  season has been good to us so far and the stock are currently in good condition. Our sheep customers can be confident in robust, big framed hardy sheep ready to take on most conditions.

Terraweena looks forward to expanding the parameters of its already considerable enterprise by incorporating the dorpers and white dorpers, confident in the belief that they will thrive in the Australian conditions

April 2008 will be forever marked on our calendars at Terraweena as a month of great note being the month we 'launched' our newly imported  white dorper genetics.

What better validation of our new blood lines than success at both local and national level.

Both the local Toowoomba show and the Dubbo Show held dorper and white dorper sections this year.  The Dubbo show hosted the 2008 National Dorper and White Dorper Show and, as such, was an event of great import where the best of the best meet and compete under an experienced South African judge invited specifically for the occasion.

2008 National Championships

Judge Ron Van der Merwe from South Africa appeared to be somewhat impressed at the standard of the standard of the animals, constantly referring to the improvement since his previous judging assignment in Australia a few years previously.

steph1.jpgTerraweena's inaugural National Championships show team consisted of seven animals, all of which were awarded a ribbon.

The trio of rams (7144, 7142 and 7091) were divided in their classes, by weight.   Terraweena 7144 and 7142 received 1st and 2nd place respectively in the heaviest white dorper lamb class, whilst Terraweena 7091 narrowly missed the heavy class, falling into the medium weight lamb class.  This class he won with much aplomb and followed up in the championship class outstripping his paddock mate Terraweena 7144 for Junior Champion Ram.

Later in the day he brought notoriety and delight to the Terraweena stud by securing the title of 2008 Australian National Grand Champion White Dorper Ram.  To achieve this title he had to compete against the Senior Grand Champion Ram, a hard call for any young lamb only 8 months old.dorp_rams.jpg

Our young ewes (7044, 7069, 7141 and 7151) flew the flag with dignity, with every one of them being awarded a ribbon on the day.

A heady experience for us all following our long association with the Boer goat industry.  Dorpers represent a new and different challenge to us - one which we meet with pride and pleasure which is now fanned by the warm glow of success at our recent showings.

The Toowoomba show preceded the National Championships by a couple of weeks and gave us cautious confidence in our stock.

Ram Terraweena 7144 was awarded the Grand Champion Ram ribbon, with his paddock mate Terraweena 7142 standing beside him as Reserve Champion Ram.  Terraweena 7091 was awarded 3rd place.  Interestingly Terraweena 7091 is from a different South African stud, namely Paardefontein, owned and operated by Stephanus Malan.  Terraweena 7144 and 7142 were the result of embryos derived from the South African stud of Gert Lotter, utilising his world champion ram Egoli and his father, Pretoria as sires for the embryo collection.

The ewes also performed exceptionally well, being placed in all the classes.
